Only three episodes into its debut season, Grey’s Anatomy finds itself thinking about brain death. I do not claim that the quality of this thinking, in a dramatic series that seeks to be a sort of “ER goes to the senior prom,” is likely to impress any licensed bioethicists. But compared with Congress in the Terri Schiavo case, the surgical residents at Seattle Grace Hospital look like Aristotle and Saint Francis of Assisi. And unlike Bill Frist, Peggy Noonan, or Tom DeLay, they are actually in the same room with the patient when they make their diagnosis, rather than on-call at the nearest television studio, sucking on the camera as if it were their feeding tube.But before getting to brain death, the new interns in Grey’s Anatomy will have to confront transplanted livers, diseased prostates, grand mal seizures, pancreatic cancers, nail-riddled skulls, their own coarse ambitions, and a rectal exam. (Sex, of which there are generous portions, must be squeezed in between shifts, like takeout pizza.) Our tour guide through the labyrinth, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), is uniquely positioned—daughter of a famous surgeon, owner of a Seattle house with rooms to let, ambivalent about following in her mother’s workaholic footsteps but still thrilled by her first experience of blood work: “That was such a high . . . I don’t know why anybody does drugs.” Though Grey’s Anatomy is situated to capitalize with sex, death, and giggles on the demographic delivered by its Desperate Housewives lead-in, I’ve given up trying to predict which doctor shows will be hits and which dead on arrival

Corrupted file repair (8 replies)

Hi all;
I have a divx reader with hard disk connected by a wireless network to my PC: while I was renaming some folders the network went down and the folders become files, so now are unreadable.
Now, when I connect the network drive, in the left column I have 8 folders (instead of the 10 that I had before) and two files of 0kb.
Before this problem these two files were two folders containing hundreds of files.
How can I restore them? remember that I don't have a physical access to the drive, only by network.

SphereXP as a replacement for explorer.exe - It Works! (8 replies)

SphereXP kicks ass!

I've got SphereXP working as the primary user interface. And... explorer.exe doesn't run on my system :D (you can't imagine how happy I am with that!)

Here's how I got it to work. A combination of software:

Common for all users:
1) LiteStep
2) AutoHotKey

Very handy for Logitech users:
3) UberOptions

... and of course ... SphereXP!

LiteStep
I used LiteStep to:

1) Replace explorer.exe (it doesn't run on my system!)

2) Remove the Taskbar and system Tray

3) have a floating Start Menu

In order to use this you need to be able to understand some scripting and how to edit config files.

AutoHotKey
I use AutoHotKey to:

1) Intercept and interpret mouse-clicks and keyboard button presses

In order to use this program, you NEED to know how to script.

UberOptions
I use UberOptions to:

1) Enhance the SetPoint driver software that came with my Logitech MX5500 Desktop (bluetooth keyboard and mouse)

2) Map special keys and buttons to alternate F-keys (like F11 and F12, but instead---> F13, F14, ... up to F24) This allowed some buttons on my keyboard and mouse to be recognized by AutoHotKey since the default functions weren't recognized.

These programs are free. I'll post links to these programs, the files I modified/created, and detailed instructions in my next post.

Active Windows Don't Stay Active? (9 replies)

Hello,

When I make an window active on the sphere (right click for the menu, then select "Make Active"), it's fine while it is on the sphere. However, when I bring that window to the front, and then send it to the sphere again it is no longer active. (until I make it active again)

Is there any way to make all windows active all of the time? Either that or make the "activeness" of a window sticky, so that when bringing it to the front and sending it back keeps it active?

Desktop icons - positioning (8 replies)

Just started using SphereXP today and find it interesting - definitely has merit once smoothed out.

The items I wasn't keen on:

- Desktop icons too small. Usually run resolution 1024x768 but SphereXP renders them at something like the 1600x1200 setting.

- 'System" icons aren't displayed: My Computer, My Docs, IE, Recycle Bin, Network Places, etc. - just shortcuts I've created.

- Shortcut names too hard to read. Aside from their diminutive size, the font/style used cuts off part of the name for longer shortcut names.

- Wallpaper. I use my default wallpaper graphic (a WinXP-supplied pic - the moon). When SphereXP is run, as with the first icon note above, the wallpaper is zoomed into - huge! - as if 1600x1200. Probably necessary to accommodate the 360-degree viewing, but is unnerving.

- Using the map. Difficult to determing positioning relative to app windows using either the "mini-map" or the larger one. A central "dot" to denote the central position (viewer) would be helpful.

Again, great app - lots of potential. Good luck!

hey whats up all? well i found a site that has a million and one backgrounds, but u have to have their program to ba able to install the skyboxes. so i went out of my way to buy that program and so now i have a ton of skyboxes free for every one!!!!

This is my problem at 07.03 06:

Sky mBroadband.exe. When trying to open the application I get an error message:

"SkyBroadband.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services" Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=)xf3c (3900), Thread id=)0xf00 (3840)

Click OK to terminate the application.

Click CANCEL to debug the application.

I click CANCEL and get:

"SkyBroadband.exe - No Debugger Found"

Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with

the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2(2). Please check computer settings.

cordbg.exe !a0xf3c

Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually.

Click on Cancel to abort the debug request.

I uninstalled via control panel - add remove progs - and then reinstalled. I have removed the application via my services at Sky Broadband and then reinstalled. All attempts to remove and use clean reinstall give the same results.
Sky Bradband technicians say this is a fault ourtside of their control and say:

We believe this issue is caused by one of two problems:

The Windows registry Performance Counter Library values have become corrupt, or
Another application has manually disabled the Performance Counter Library

Due to the complexity of this issue, we recommend that you seek advice from Microsoft Windows XP support, or a similarly qualified technical reference. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Wow, this is a really cool program!!! But I'm wondering how I can open normal apps... It seems like right now all I can do is look at web pages... If I type "file://" into the address bar, somehow it tries to re-download the executable... Anyway, maybe I'm missing something really obvious... But any help would be appreciated... TIA

Hi Everyone,

I have used SphereXP a while back and love it. I was really happy to see the support offered by business in the way of grants to its developer.

I have now seen screenshots for M$FT Vista (http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/0,1206,l=171996&s=26945&a=171997,00.asp) and was instantly aware that the "Flip-3D" look & feel in Vista was a direct copy of SphereXP.

I am now wondering if M$FT is paying royalties for its use.

Does the author have patents for SphereXP? If so are they to be contested in light of M$FTs direct use of the SphereXP look & feel.

Just a thought.

Hello, I have looked through the forums but I have not found something that clarifies things for me. Sorry if this is a repost or a stupid question. =)

When I send any program window to the sphere I can move it around, zoom it etc just fine. But I cannot do any work with them. Scrollbars do not work, buttons, textfields etc. Also key combinations do not work (for example CTRL + N in mozilla).

As it is I cannot work at all with programs in the sphere. I have to double click on the window to get it as a normal "Windows window" to be able to do anything with it. My question now is: is this the way it is supposed to be?

I ask because when I tried SphereXP I was under the impression that you should be able to work with the programs just like you can normally.

Great view, but the only 3 buttons at the upper left are inoperable. The sphere zooms and my Logitech mouse works just dandy.

Along with every new Idea comes a wave of innovation. With a 3D desktop what thoughts have been put into a new mouse. I think with a little tweaking that the old nintendo glove would make an amazing mouse if it could be made less cumbersom.

Either that or laser optics mouse. This could give sphere xp that extra something to really differentiate it.

Thoughts on this?
